Browns’ coaches asked Smith to lose weight so that he can be quicker and more effective. This is another indicator that the Browns plan to use both Lee Suggs and Reuben Droughns out of the backfield with Droughns acting as the fullback at times.

Smith is competing with second-year man Jerome Felton for the starting fullback job, but Kowalski thinks the Lions will keep both players. Neither figures to get more than 10 carries all season as they block for Kevin Smith.

The deal included a $1.1 million signing bonus. Smith is one of the better run-blockers in the league. His signing signifies Cleveland’s re-committment to the run and is bad news for Deuce McAlister owners.

Smith lost a camp battle to Jerome Felton and was active as a backup for just eight games. Turning 32 in March, Smith’s career is likely nearing its end.

Castille added muscle during the offseason while Smith chose not to participate in the team’s offseason workouts, so there’s a chance this is simply depth chart shenanigans.
