Browns hosted free agent TE Irv Smith Jr. for a visit.
The Browns also hosted free agent tight ends Tommy Sweeney and Geoff Swaim for visits. David Njoku suffered an ankle injury in Week 1 and the visits suggest Cleveland expects him to miss some time. He is currently considered week-to-week. Smith was most recently cut by the Chiefs. Despite his second-round pedigree, Smith has failed to make much of an impact in the NFL. He would not be a fantasy option if he signs with Cleveland.
  • CHI Wide Receiver #87
Bears signed WR Freddie Swain, formerly of the Dolphins.
Swain was a sixth-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2020 and caught 38 passes for 502 yards and six touchdowns in his two seasons with the team. He spent time with the Broncos and Dolphins in 2022 and spent most of last season on the Dolphins’ practice squad. Swain didn’t play a regular-season snap in 2023 and has appeared in just four regular-season games over the last two years. He’ll have to battle for a spot on the Bears’ 53-man roster this offseason. In addition to Swain, the Bears also signed tight end Tommy Sweeney.
  • CHI Tight End #89
    Bears signed TE Tommy Sweeney.
The 28-year-old former Bill missed all of 2023 after suffering a practice field “medical event” with the Giants. His age, limited production history, and missed 2023 will impact his 53-man roster odds, but he has signed at the right time of the offseason to at least give himself a shot.
  • Tight End #87
Giants signed TE Tommy Sweeney, formerly of the Bills.
A 27-year-old blocker, Sweeney has 18 career catches. He, of course, has experience in Brian Daboll’s system after the two worked together in Buffalo. Despite the Giants’ continued dearth of pass-catching threats, Sweeney’s blocking career trajectory will not be changing in the Big Apple.

  • Tight End #87
Bills declared TE Tommy Sweeney, DT DaQuan Jones, CB Christian Benford, OL Ike Boettger, LB Terrel Bernard, LB Baylon Spector, and S Jared Mayden inactive for their Divisional Round game against the Bengals.
Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips was listed as questionable with a shoulder issue and is inactive. With Sweeney being a healthy scratch, Quintin Morris will continue to serve as Dawson Knox’s backup.

  • Tight End #87
Buffalo declared TE Tommy Sweeney, OL Ike Boettger, OL Justin Murray, LB Baylon Spector, CB Christian Benford, and DB Jared Mayden inactive for Week 18 vs the Patriots.
Sweeney will miss his third straight, leaving Quintin Morris to back up Dawson Knox. Buffalo can lock up the No. 2 seed with a win in Week 18.

  • Tight End #87
Bills declared TE Tommy Sweeney, G Ike Boettger, OL Justin Murray. OL Alec Anderson, LB Baylon Spector, CB Xavier Rhodes, and S Dean Marlowe inactive for Week 17 against the Bengals.
Sweeney is inactive for the second consecutive contest, leaving only Dawson Knox and Quintin Morris as the active tight ends. Alec Anderson was recently called up to the active roster only to be inactive on game day, which is probably the most surprising news out of Buffalo. Xavier Rhodes will be inactive again now that Tre’Davious White is healthy.

  • Tight End #87
Tommy Sweeney caught 2-of-2 targets for 10 yards in the Bills’ Week 9 loss to the Jaguars.
Sweeney was not involved in the game in a meaningful way, and it seems like some of Dawson Knox’s former targets have shifted to Cole Beasley. Beasley had 11 targets, and even though he had a dusty 3.0 YPT, it seems unlikely that Sweeney will be able to pass him in the target pecking order. Sweeney will be a desperation-only option for as long as Knox is out.

  • BUF Tight End #88
Bills head coach Sean McDermott said Dawson Knox (hand) is out for Week 9 against the Jaguars.
Knox is still recovering from a broken hand, leaving Tommy Sweeney as Buffalo’s starting tight end against the Jaguars. Sweeney in Week 8 had encouraging usage against the Dolphins, running a route on 77 percent of Josh Allen’s drop backs and catching three balls for 30 yards. Sweeney will again be a fine streaming option for fantasy managers seeking startable tight ends.

  • Tight End #87
Tommy Sweeney caught 3-of-4 targets for 30 yards in Buffalo’s Week 8 win over the Dolphins.
Rather than putting Sweeney in the same role as Dawson Knox (hand surgery), the Bills leaned on more four-wide sets to get Gabriel Davis (4/29/1) involved in the passing game. Sweeney ultimately finished tied with Emmanuel Sanders (0/0) for fifth on the team in targets. Davis is the pivot to roster in deeper leagues for as long as Knox is sidelined.
