Chargers signed tackle Wesley Britt, a fifth-round pick, to a three-year contract.
The Alabama product is one of three young O-linemen drafted by San Diego in the later rounds this year.
  • Nick Kaczur is the favorite to be New England’s right tackle again this year.
Kaczur may face competition from Wesley Britt and Ryan O’Callaghan, but has the most experience. There was talk in May that Kaczur could be cut.
  • FA Center
Second-round rookie Ryan Kalil has won a starting job for the Panthers.
He may give way to RG Jeremy Bridges after Bridges’ two-game suspension, but if he plays well, could start the entire season at his natural center spot.
  • Patriots downgraded T Wesley Britt (personal) and special teams ace Mel Mitchell (groin) to out for Sunday’s game against the Cowboys.
Britt’s absence could leave New England a little thin at tackle with Matt Light suffering from the flu. Kelley Washington will probably take some of Mitchell’s special teams duties.
  • FA Linebacker
Patriots released LB Paris Lenon, DL Titus Adams, OL Wesley Britt, CB Herana-Daze Jones, CB Jamar Love, and WR Terrence Nunn.
You can tell the Pats are getting better because they’re parting with the end of their 2008 roster. It’s a scary development for the rest of the NFL. Britt has starting experience and should find work pretty shortly.
  • BUF Linebacker
Patriots re-signed exclusive rights free agent OLB Pierre Woods and OT Wesley Britt.
Britt is a swing tackle who’s played mostly on the right side. Woods, who was undrafted out of Michigan in 2006, would be a starter if the season began today. However, the Patriots are likely to add another OLB high in the draft.
  • CLE Linebacker
The Patriots tendered exclusive rights free agent LB Eric Alexander, S Ray Ventrone, OT Wesley Britt, and OLB Pierre Woods.
Alexander and Woods may both be in line for increased playing time this year. Ventrone is a valuable special teamer. Britt is a reserve with upside.
  • Offensive lineman Wesley Britt started his first career game at right tackle Sunday.
Britt was subbing for injured rookie RT Ryan O’Callaghan and helped New England’s line turn in an excellent performance. Second-year pro Nick Kaczur, nursing an injury of his own, also spent some time at the position.
  • Patriots re-signed OT Wesley Britt.
Britt, 27, made starts at right tackle in ’06 and ’07, but played in only two games as a backup last year. The Pats don’t seem especially high on him.
