Malkin (undisclosed) still isn’t skating, working out

What exactly is bothering Evgeni Malkin? The Penguins said it was precautionary when it was announced that the star forward would miss the start of training camp with an undisclosed injury.

Fast forward more than a week and Malkin isn’t working out, much less skating. So should Pittsburgh fans be worried at this point? Penguins coach Mike Johnston seems to be arguing against that. He thinks Malkin will start getting back up to speed in the next four to five days, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

“I know I’ve said that before,” Johnston said in regards to that timetable. “It just seems to be one of those things where, if I believed it was going to be long term, I’d tell you it was long term. I believe it’s not going to be long term. But it’s still a few days away before he’s going to be able to work out and be on the ice.”

Pittsburgh’s opener isn’t until Oct. 9, so Malkin still has time to recover before this starts eating into the regular season. The Penguins’ preseason schedule will end on Wednesday though and he’s yet to play in a game.
