On Jan. 26, the New York islanders revealed that first-line forward Kyle Okposo would miss six-to-eight with an upper-body injury. A report surfaced earlier this week that the injury in question was actually a torn retina.

What still wasn’t clear was when or how he sustained the injury, given that he was practicing with the club essentially up until the time he was placed on the injured reserve list. As it turns out, he had been playing through the issue, according to Newsday’s sources.

Okposo was reportedly even dealing with it on Jan. 16 when he scored four goals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He had another goal and an assist the following day.

Eventually Okposo went to see the eye doctor to make sure he wasn’t dealing with anything serious and it’s presumably at that point that he discovered the full extent of the damage. He underwent surgery as a result.

The Islanders lost three straight games from Jan. 29 to Feb. 3 without Okposo and only scored five goals over that span. However, they bounced back with a 3-2 shootout win against Philadelphia on Thursday.
