Lindsey Vonn gave up her World Cup super-G standings lead by finishing third in Bansko, Bulgaria, on Monday.
Vonn was .28 of a second behind Austrian winner Anna Fenninger, who passed Vonn in the super-G standings. Fenninger leads the American by 32 points with three scheduled super-Gs left this season. Vonn still controls her own destiny in the race for that discipline title.
“Any time you’re on the podium, it’s good,” Vonn told media in Bansko.
Slovenian Tina Maze was second Monday, .16 behind, repeating the World Championships super-G podium order from Feb. 3.
Austrian Nicole Hosp was fourth. The top four women were, in order, the last four (and only) active World Cup overall winners.
Vonn, a four-time World Cup overall champ, made a World Cup podium for the 110th time in her career. She matched retired Austrian Renate Goetschl for second place among women and is now three behind women’s record holder Annemarie Moser-Proell. The overall record is 155, held by Swede Ingemar Stenmark.
Vonn, who plans to race at least through the 2018 Olympics, has 64 World Cup wins, two more than Moser-Proell’s women’s record and 22 behind Stenmark’s overall record.
Vonn reportedly complained of dangerous race conditions in Bansko during a super combined Sunday. She was 24th after the super-G run and opted not to ski the slalom run. Fog wreaked havoc on racing all weekend, canceling events Friday and Saturday and delaying Sunday’s event.
“The snow was really good [Monday],” Vonn said. “I’m definitely happier today than yesterday.”
The women’s Alpine skiing World Cup continues with a downhill and super-G in Garmish-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Saturday and Sunday.
