Boxing: USA’s Stevenson beats up Brazilian, Russell advances

Team USA bantwamweight boxer Shakur Stevenson delivered on his promise during his Olympic debut, cruising past Brazilian fighter Robenilson De Jesus 3-0 on Sunday at Riocentro Pavilion 6.

Despite being nine years the Brazilian’s junior, Stevenson won 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, wearing De Jesus down over the course of three rounds.

In light welterweight action, American boxer Gary Russell beat Thailand’s Wuttichai Masuk 2-1.

Russell won the first round 10-9 on all three judges cards but lost the second by the same score. It was a split decision in the third, but two judges scored it 10-9 for Russell.
