One of Mikaela Shiffrin‘s top challengers will miss the Olympics.

Slovakia’s Veronika Velez Zuzulova, 29, hoped to come back from a torn ACL in early October without having surgery to compete in Sochi.

Plans changed after her first day back on skis.

She will have season-ending surgery, according to a message posted on her Facebook account.

Zuzulova was third behind Shiffrin and Tina Maze in the World Cup slalom standings last season and the only woman to finish in the top five each of the last three seasons. She was seventh at the World Championships in February.
