WATCH LIVE: Men’s cross-country skiathlon, featuring Petter Northug

Finland Cross Country Preview

FILE - A Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, photo from files showing Norway’s Petter Northug as he rests on his poles during the men’s cross country skiing sprint qualification round at FIS World Cup in Kuusamo, Finland. Northug, the Norwegian double gold medalist in Vancouver four years ago and a nine-time world champion, had a stubborn virus at the start of the season that set back his preparations. He has only won one race so far on the World Cup _ a 10-kilometer stage on the Tour de Ski _ but says he’s back to full fitness and will be a threat again in Sochi. “I’m way ahead of where I should be (fitness wise),” Northug said after the recently concluded Norwegian championships. “The plan is to really top my form for Sochi. ... I won’t be satisfied unless I get a gold.”(AP Photo/Lehtikuva, Markku Ulander, File) FINLAND OUT

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Petter Northug of Norway hopes to put on a show once again in the men’s cross-country skiathlon (15km classic + 15km free), which goes off at 5 a.m. ET. You can catch it at the top of the hour on NBCOlympics.com.

Northug won’t be the only big name in the field, though. Switzerland’s Dario Cologna, the 2010 Olympic champion in the 15km freestyle, will look to prove that he’s back on form after sustaining a right ankle injury last fall.
