Dolphins signed C Jake Grove to a five-year, $29.5 million contract with $14 million guaranteed.
Grove, 29, battled injuries throughout his Raiders career, starting over 12 games just once in five years. But the former No. 45 overall pick was always known as a top talent and Miami was set on replacing undersized Samson Satele. Satele, a Cam Cameron holdover, will now be a backup. The Fins have $154M in deals invested at center, left guard, and both tackle positions.
  • Colts signed C Samson Satele, formerly of the Raiders.
This should close the books on Jeff Saturday’s 13-year Colts career, as he’s drawing interest from the Titans, Packers, and Broncos. Satele has started 74 games over the past five seasons with the Dolphins and Raiders. He struggles against wide-bodied 3-4 nose tackles, but is otherwise a solid run-blocker.
  • Raiders LG Robert Gallery underwent surgery to repair a broken fibula Monday and will miss 4-6 weeks.
Beats injured reserve. Gallery had a plate inserted into the leg and will be replaced by C Chris Morris indefinitely. Samson Satele is a starter again.
  • FA Center #58
The Raiders have named Chris Morris their starting center.
He beat out offseason trade acquisition Samson Satele. Morris, a 2006 seventh-round pick, has better size and adequate athleticism for Oakland’s zone-blocking scheme. Satele was getting overpowered too often in practice.
  • FA Tackle #75
LT Mario Henderson and RT Cornell Green opened minicamp as starters on the Raiders first-team offense.
Free agent signing Khalif Barnes is expected to compete for a starting role, but for now is behind Henderson, who was solid in the closing weeks of the ’08 season. Erik Pears is set to backup Green on the other side. C Samson Satele remains out of action following shoulder surgery.
  • Dolphins traded C Samson Satele to the Raiders for a sixth-round draft pick.
The two teams will also swap picks in another round. The new Dolphins regime soured on Satele last season, so Jake Grove was signed to take his place. Satele is considered a bit undersized, but that won’t be as much of a hindrance on a zone-blocking team like the Raiders. He will be an upgrade on John Wade and Chris Morris, who were not serious candidates to start.
  • FA Defensive Back #37
Raiders coach Tom Cable said that LCB Chris Johnson, C Samson Setele and DE Matt Shaughnessy all “felt pretty good” Monday after their Week 7 concussions.
We won’t know until later in the week if they could possibly sit out against the Seahawks. On a side note, Johnson said the Raiders are “probably the most talented team in the National Football League,” which indicates that his concussion is clearly the most severe.
  • Raiders LG Robert Gallery (hamstring) is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Rams.
Daniel Loper would replace Gallery in the starting lineup. C Samson Satele took first team reps at center over rookie Jared Veldheer at practice throughout the week, but coach Tom Cable would not say who would start. The Raiders’ offensive line was awful against the Titans’ Week 1, and look for QB Jason Campbell to be running for his life again Sunday against the Rams.
  • The Raiders are not expected to re-sign free agent C Samson Satele.
Pro Football Focus rated Satele as a top-five run-blocking center in 2011, but the cap-strapped Raiders may view him as a luxury they can’t afford. 2011 second-rounder Stefen Wisniewski can be moved back to center if needed.
  • Free agent C Samson Satele was arrested in Honolulu, Hawaii on disorderly conduct charges early Saturday morning.
Oakland’s starting center the past three seasons, Satele is a Hawaii native. Not expected back with the Raiders, Satele graded out as the league’s 18th best center in 2011 by Pro Football Focus. He has yet to line up a visit in a free agent market unusually ripe with centers, however, and getting arrested won’t help his cause.
