Gilmartin

Gilmartin had been pitching this summer for the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. The 31-year-old southpaw allowed four earned runs over 4 1/3 innings of work last season with the Rays.

Gilmartin was designated for assignment earlier this week, ahead of the Rays’ Wild Card Series opener against the Blue Jays, and ultimately passed through waivers unclaimed. The 30-year-old right-hander surrendered four earned runs on seven hits and four walks over 4 1/3 innings of relief this season with Tampa Bay.

The move clears a spot for Shane McClanahan on the Rays’ Wild Card round roster. This marks the third time this season that Gilmartin was designated for assignment. The southpaw allowed four runs over 4 1/3 innings with the Rays during the regular season.

At least he was just optioned this time instead of being designated for assignment, which had already happened twice this season. Gilmartin will stick around as swingman depth.

Gilmartin has been on and off the big league roster multiple times this season. He’ll provide some length in the bullpen.

Gilmartin was just outrighted off the 40-man roster earlier this month, but Yonny Chirinos’ Tommy John surgery opened a spot for the southpaw to rejoin the club. The 30-year-old appeared in one game with the Rays before being DFA’d, allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Gilmartin was designated for assignment on Sunday and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 30-year-old left-hander holds a career 4.30 ERA and 89/40 K/BB ratio in 111 major league innings.

The Rays needed to clear space on their 40-man roster. Gilmartin allowed three runs over 3 1/3 innings Saturday in his lone appearance with the big club.
