The Yanks were on the front foot from the opening whistle and Balogun opened the scoring just before halftime when Weston McKennie won the ball and played him in behind in the same swift motion. Balogun swept home from the edge of the box for his 3rd goal of the tournament, but his momentous night was soured in the 64th minute when he was sent off for a reckless challenge from behind. Upon video review, Balogun was shown a red card and will now miss the round of 16 clash with Belgium on Monday (8 pm ET).

Chances were few and far between for the Americans from that point forward, but Tillman put the game away with a fantastic free kick in the 82nd. Matt Freese made three saves on the night and the USMNT secured its first knockout victory in the World Cup since beating Mexico in the round of 16 at the 2002 tournament.
