Aston Villa have suspended striker and former club captain Gabriel Agbonlahor.

According to reports, photos of the academy product, 29, drinking and with gas canisters have emerged from him partying on Saturday night, the same day Aston Villa’s relegation was confirmed.

Agbonlahor was not in the squad at Old Trafford as he was told he wasn’t fit enough, and he was also left out by Eric Black for their recent defeat to Chelsea after pictures of him with a shisha pipe in Dubai appeared.

He had since been reinstated to the first team but this latest incident is the latest in a sorry state of affairs for Villa. Joleon Lescott’s comments following their relegation were unacceptable, while David Bernstein and Lord Mervyn King resigned from Villa’s board on Monday.

Villa were relegated from the Premier League last weekend, as they sit bottom on 16 points after a dreadful campaign which saw both Tim Sherwood and Remi Garde lose their jobs with Villa winning just three of their 34 games so far. It is the first time they’ve been relegated to England’s second-tier since 1987.

The club released the following statement on their website on Tuesday:

Aston Villa Football Club has today suspended Gabby Agbonlahor pending an internal investigation.

This is following allegations concerning his conduct at the weekend.

There will be no further comment from the Club in relation to this matter until the investigation has been completed.
