Twas a pretty strong weekend for American players in Europe, as a trio of attackers scored goals and a bevy of defenders and netminders worked good shifts in the own end.

That’s all before Brad Guzan hopes to get Aston Villa’s problems straightened out on NBCSN later today against mighty Southampton.

Let’s begin with the goals, as Aron Johannsson scored his first since returning from injury. The Icelandic-Alabaman netted the only goal of the contest in AZ Alkmaar’s 1-0 win over Vitesse Arnhem with this header:

Not to be outdone, check this slick supporters section view of Terrence Boyd’s bullet goal, one of two he scored in Red Bull Liepzig’s 4-1 home win over St. Pauli.

Also scoring was Wiener Neustadt’s Conor O’Brien, whose late penalty in Austria was the icing on the cake against RZ Pellets WAC. The goal was the 26-year-old’s first of the season.

Timmy Chandler of Eintracht Frankfurt and John Anthony Brooks of Werder Bremen each went 90 minutes on Bundesliga back lines in wins this weekend, while Tim Howard and Everton rallied to top visiting West Ham.
