The very best thing about my new gig along NBC Sports Digital’s platform is that Arlo White, NBC’s lead voice for soccer, is contractually obligated to come raise a glass at my local pub at least three times over the next calendar year! I’m not even sure Arlo knows about this. (Always read the fine print, man!)
Seriously, Arlo really is quite something at his job. I envy his efficiency of words while speaking extemporaneously. Because, take it from someone who is a writer by trade, having also done some TV and radio work: life gets significantly harder without the luxury of the backspace key. Know what I mean?
Here’s something you may not know about Arlo: he’s a true soccer man. I talked to him recently by phone on a Saturday morning. He was in England, en route to a Leicester City match. That’s the side he’s supported forever, and he was absolutely stoked to sit in the stands that day, to be a fan among fans. To have a pint before the match, and maybe have a shout or two at the referee during the contest, something he would never do in professional life.
Watch the master at work: here, Arlo says eloquently in three minutes what I couldn’t have possible spit out in twice the time. If you only see three minutes of preseason MLS talk, these are the three to watch.
