Gignac reportedly ok’s new Marseille deal amid transfer rumors

Gignac

Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, often rumored with an exit to the Premier League, has reportedly agreed to a new contract with Marseille to keep him at the Ligue 1 outfit for at least another.

French paper L’Equipe is reporting the new contract, but also says the only reason he signed back on is because he doesn’t want to leave on a free transfer, with his contract expiring this coming summer. They speculate he still could leave next season.

Gignac has been electric this season in France, ripping home 10 goals in 10 matches to lead the league in scoring, two ahead of Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette.

The goalscoring form has put him back on the rumor mill, with Juventus reportedly interested along with Arsenal, and his agent agreed.

“Given the fact that he is not very old, he has a real market value,” his agent told L’Equipe back on September 30. “This is a striker with a relatively atypical profile, responsive to the physical challenge, the archetypal player who can succeed at a big club. He can play in England, Arsenal or Liverpool , no problem. For me, it is between $15million and $18million.”

Gignac is 28, and he’s always been productive in Ligue 1 but also a bit unlucky. He was rumored to be very close to a move to Fulham a few years ago but an injury shot down the transfer.

But whether he leaves at the end of the year or not, it’s a massive boost for Marseille to know he will be around at least until the end of the season. His form has helped Marseille to the top of the French league table on 25 points from 10 matches, four points above PSG with a game in hand.
