Ligue 1 player swats red card from ref’s hand to prevent keeper sending off

EA Guingamp’s had a tough go of things this season, so their players are starting to take drastic measures to maintain a level playing field.

Coming off a season where they finished 16th in the league but won the Coupe de France, the club is bottom of the table with six points so far.

So this weekend, when Guingamp was trailing Montpellier 2-1 and about to have its goalkeeper sent off, defender Benjamin Angoua tried a new strategy to prevent the sending off.

After goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa angrily but unsuccessfully protested his innocence, Angoua got in referee Philippe Kalt’s face, and as the official whipped out the card of doom, Angoua attempted to pull it from his hands.

Obviously, the move did little to prevent the inevitable, as the card went tumbling to the ground, and Kalt simply retrieved his tool and brandished it again as Samassa walked off.

Shockingly, he didn’t also book Angoua, who got away with the stunt. However, puzzlingly Kalt did book Younousse Sankhere, who runs in at the tail end of the incident and also begins to jaw at the official. See GIF’s of the incident below:
