Liverpool 1-1 Burnley: Reds squander chances galore in fourth straight draw

Florian Wirtz turned his best performance in a Liverpool shirt on Saturday, but the Reds still dropped points and had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield.

Liverpool’s $150-million man scored the opening goal in the 42nd minute (his 3rd in the Premier League) and went dangerously close to scoring and assisting two more in the opening few minutes of the second half. Alas, a pair of top saves from Martin Dubravka denied Wirtz and Cody Gakpo from close range — just two of Liverpool’s 32 shots in the game (11 on target) — and then Burnley were level only 10 minutes later as Marcus Edwards punished the Reds for a careless mistake playing out of the back.

The draw leaves Liverpool (36 points) 4th in the table, now just a point above rivals Manchester United and two ahead of Chelsea in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification. Burnley (14 points), meanwhile, remain 19th and are seven points behind Nottingham Forest (for the time being) on the other side of the relegation line.

The Reds’ 11-game run isn’t without blemishes, which perhaps explains why they aren’t being lauded as much as expected after ending a terrible run and propelling themselves back up the table.

Liverpool have drawn their last three league outings, 0-0 vs Leeds, 2-2 at Fulham, and 0-0 at Arsenal. Arne Slot’s men will feel encouraged by more good displays from Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, but there are major questions at the back after Conor Bradley underwent season-ending surgery to deplete a fullback corps which has been underwhelming even with the Northern Ireland man.

Scott Parker’s Burnley, meanwhile, have drawn Bournemouth, Everton, and Manchester United in the last few weeks but those three points are their only positive league results since the calendar turned to November. The Clarets have gone 12 Premier League matches without a win and will hope that last weekend’s 5-1 home triumph over Millwall in the FA Cup can bolster their confidence for a survival fight that has looked less likely by the match week. Burnley are eight points back of 17th-place Nottingham Forest in the race for safety.

Liverpool vs Burnley prediction

The Clarets have the quality to string together some more positive results and, yes, even wins, but this game doesn’t figure to be included in that mix. Wirtz, Ekitike, and friends have been playing quite well and are in their best form of their short Premier League tenures. Liverpool 3-1 Burnley.
