San Diego Padres lead investor Peter Seidler is one of three well-off, well-known businessmen interested in bringing a Major League Soccer franchise to “America’s Finest City.” (Yes, that’s one of the city’s nicknames.)

According to a report from the Associated Press, which features a quote from Seidler himself, the overall plan would be for the MLS team to share a stadium with San Diego State University’s Division I football team.
The other two potential investors are Steve Altman, a retired Qualcomm executive, and Mike Stone of FS Investors.

The SDSU football program currently shares 48-year-old, 70,000-seat Qualcomm Stadium with the NFL’s Chargers, who are angling for a new stadium in downtown San Diego after failing to relocate the franchise to Los Angeles.
Los Angeles FC, MLS’s third (at present, following the dissolved Chivas USA) franchise in the state of California, is set to become the league’s 22nd or 23rd or 24th team at the start of the 2018 season in a downtown stadium expected to cost $250 million.
