Tottenham fly past exhausted Newcastle

Heung-min Son had a goal and two assists and Richarlison scored two goals as Tottenham worked over weary Newcastle 4-1 in a match-up of two of the Premier League’s most injury-stricken sides on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Destiny Udogie opened the scoring for Spurs, who remain without James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Rodrigo Betancur but had little trouble against a team in even worse shape.

Joelinton scored in stoppage time for Newcastle to ruin Guglielmo Vicario’s clean sheet.

The Magpies welcomed Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff back off the bench but have been using the same XI for weeks and added goalkeeper Nick Pope to the injured list this week. Newcastle regulars Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Joe Willock, Jacub Murphy, and Harvey Barnes are all out through injuries, while Sandro Tonali’s suspended for the season.

Spurs end a five-match winless run which included four losses and claim their 30th point, three back of fourth-place Manchester City. Newcastle’s 26 points sit them seventh, above Brighton on goal differential.

Spurs relish feast of relief

The home crowd and weary opponent made for a much-needed win and seized opportunity by Ange Postecoglou’s men.

Son was buzzing from the opening whistle and has become the club’s talisman, his ever-present energy keeping the team in every single game.

That wasn’t even needed on Sunday, as Brennan Johnson joined Richarlison in running all over a Magpies team that needs a break and instead has to rally to save its Champions League hopes at midweek.

And so it wasn’t a surprise when the second, third, and fourth goals went into Martin Dubravka’s goal on Sunday, a sort of turn-about is fair play for the Magpies demolition of Spurs last season.

Eddie Howe bet on using the same 10 field players over and over again with few alternatives on the bench, and it sure looks to have bit him repeatedly in back-to-back blowout away losses. — Nick Mendola

What’s next?

Newcastle host AC Milan in a bid to keep their European season alive on Wednesday, then welcome in-form Fulham at 10am ET Saturday.

Tottenham vs Newcastle live updates! - By Joe Prince-Wright at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Spurs get first pen of season

Heung-min Son wins a penalty off of Martin Dubravka, and converts it for 4-0.

Should be 4-0 as Johnson spanks the post

Brennan Johnson comes so close to a fourth for Spurs as his shots smashes off the post and then moments later Son’s effort across goal just misses Johnson at the back post. Spurs flying. Pass it on: Ange-ball is back. The home fans are loving this here and are applauding their team with every chance they get. This is the Spurs of earlier in the season.

Spurs in dreamland as Richarlison grabs his second - Tottenham 3-0 Newcastle (60th minute)

A lovely ball over the top from Pedro Porro finds Richarlison and he takes one touch before sliding the ball underneath Dubravka and in. Surely that is that now.

Richarlison doubles his tally to make it 3-0
Richarlison scores his second goal of the match as Spurs take a commanding 3-0 lead against Newcastle at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

We are off for the second half

Newcastle have had plenty of the ball early in the second half and the home fans are getting a little edgy. Understandable given the recent collapses from winning positions.

Half time: Tottenham 2-0 Newcastle

That was a brilliant first half of football. Tottenham deservedly head but Newcastle had plenty of chances on the counter too. Can Spurs hang on to this lead this time? Surely they can...

So close to a third for Tottenham

Richarlison so close to making it 3-0. He can’t get enough on a header from two yards out after Kulusevski’s cross took a deflection and spun up into the air. Tottenham look like scoring every time they come forward. Newcastle all over the place at the back.

Brilliant from Son as Richarlison doubles Spurs’ lead - Tottenham 2-0 Newcastle (38th minute)

Absolutely Son-sational! He wriggles past Trippier with a wonderful piece of skill and finds Richarlison to steer home. Wild celebrations here at Tottenham. They needed that second goal. Badly. They almost grab another just after as Johnson fires just wide.

Son sets up Richarlison to make it 2-0 v. Magpies
Heung-Min Son's dazzling run results in Richarlison slotting home Spurs' second goal of the first half to go up 2-0 against Newcastle at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Excellent first half so far for the hosts, but Newcastle still a threat

Tottenham are getting so much joy out wide. Son and Johnson are whipping in crosses galore. Livramento and Trippier have no protection whatsoever because positioning of Udogie and Porro is dragging Gordon and Almiron out of wide areas and creating huge gaps. Spurs have gone 1-0 up for the sixth game in a row and we know they didn’t win on the last five occasions that happened. But this has a slightly different feel to it. As I say that Newcastle should make it 1-1 as Johnson gives the ball away and Almiron is in but his tame effort is straight at Vicario. It feels like this Tottenham team are just one stray pass away from disaster.

Spurs take the lead through Destiny Udogie - Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle (26th minute)

All of their crosses into the box have finally paid off. Destiny Udogie starts the move as he plays it out wide to Son and his cross is perfect for the onrushing Udogie to tap home. Tottenham lead and Ange Postecoglou punches the air in delight. Despite a couple of early scares, Tottenham deserve that.

Udogie slots home Tottenham's opener v. Newcastle
Destiny Udogie gets on the receiving end of Heung-Min Son's cross to give Spurs a 1-0 lead over the Magpies in the first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Romero’s header cleared off the line

Cristian Romero heads a corner towards the bottom corner but Miguel Almiron is there to thump it off the line. Spurs building momentum.

Solid start as Tottenham try to get on the front foot

This game has started exactly as we expected: end-to-end. Bruno Guimaraes drills one just over at one end after Tottenham had chances through Richarlison and Son. Moments later Ben Davies gets a crucial touch on a cross just as Isak is about to tap home. Davies celebrates that clearance like it was a goal but Newcastle are getting some great opportunities on the counter thanks to this Spurs high line. Feels like this won’t stay 0-0 for too much longer...

Pre-match chat

The DJ is cranking out some absolute bangers here and there is a real buzz and expectation in the air. We are all expecting plenty of goals, entertainment and general chaos. This is Tottenham vs Newcastle! Strap in, this could be incredible.

Hello and welcome to north London! The rain showers have passed (for now) and the winter sun is peeking through the clouds. It is a lovely day for what should be a very entertaining game between two teams who need a win and are usually much better off when they go all-out for victory. It seems like Ange Postecoglou and Eddie Howe would get along if they had a pint down the pub and their playing philosophy is quite similar. Of course, this is all about who will actually be available due to so many injuries for both teams but we’re still in for a treat of a game.

When it comes to the team news, Heung-min Son is fit to start which is a huge boost and it is all-out attack for Spurs. When Ange-ball isn’t going as expected what does Ange do? Double down, of course... As for Newcastle’s lineup, well, it is the same lineup they keep rolling out. That is pretty much all they have, while Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson are at least fit enough for the bench which is a boost.

Tottenham lineup

Vicario; Porro, Romero, Davies, Udogie; Bissouma, Sarr; Johnson, Kulusevski Son; Richarlison

Newcastle lineup

Dubravka; Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento; Miley, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon
