Houston 1-1 Portland: Bruin, Fernandez trade goals; Timbers tie again
Most of the action came in the first half in Sunday’s lone MLS tilt.
Will Bruin’s early goal for the Dynamo added to Portland’s misery before Gaston Fernandez found an equalizer for the Terrific Tying Timbers, sending the match to another split of the points (which is happening many, many times in MLS).
Brad Davis sent in a looping cross and Bruin rose above a ball-watching Timbers back line to head down and past Donovan Ricketts in the 18th minute (captured so well by Nigel Brooks below).

But Gaston Fernandez cut through the 18 to pick up a rolling ball and hammered a high shot past Tally Hall. The Dynamo keeper had zero choice but to watch the ball whiz past him and into the goal. His third of the season came in the 33rd minute.
At 2W-4L-2T, Houston pulls past Philadelphia on goal differential in the East, while Portland’s first road point of the season isn’t much consolation for the struggling Timbers. At 0W-3L-5T, Portland remains in the basement. The Timbers are five points out of the West’s last playoff spot (with loads of time to go).
