Taylor Teagarden, out for the season after Tommy John surgery, has started catching bullpen sessions in Arizona.
The hope in February was that Teagarden would be able to do some DHing this season, but that changed when he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back. Now the Rangers are just hoping to get him back for the Instructional League in September.

X-rays came back negative, but we should have a better idea regarding his status after all results are in. The 28-year-old is the favorite to serve as Baltimore’s backup catcher, but a prolonged absence could open the door for Ronny Paulino or John Hester.

Teagarden had two minor knee surgeries this offseason. As long as he can avoid setbacks, the 28-year-old should open the season on time as Baltimore’s backup catcher.

Teagarden has already had X-rays and an MRI. He was projected to serve as Baltimore’s backup catcher this season, but there’s a chance he might not be ready for Opening Day. Non-roster players Ronny Paulino and John Hester loom as possible replacements.

Teagarden also had an MRI earlier in the day. He has been feeling stiffness in his back for close to a week and the Orioles want to be sure that it’s not going to be a lingering problem. The 28-year-old is expected to serve as Baltimore’s backup catcher this year.
