Dolphins signed Oregon S Verone McKinley.
McKinley (5’10/198) is undersized but makes up for his lack of stature with an aggressive play style that will sometimes lead to big hits and other times cause him to overrun plays, leading to his woeful 21 percent missed tackle rate this year. McKinley has sound ball skills that have resulted in multiple seasons with four or more interceptions including a nation-leading six in 2021 to go with a team-leading 11 PBUs. His poor athletic testing is going to be a hurdle to overcome at the next level. McKinley’s 4.67 40 is a 29th-percentile mark and his agility scores were terrible as well. Despite his All-American accolades, McKinley never passed the 70.0 grade mark in a season according to PFF’s overall defensive grade, and several of his interceptions were the product of “right place, right time.” He will face an uphill battle to earn significant NFL playing time.
