Castillo will further augment the Phillies’ minor-league infield depth heading into the 2022 campaign. The 32-year-old veteran shortstop hit a meager .209/.255/.242 across 233 plate appearances between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester with the division-rival Nationals last season. He’s the textbook definition of veteran journeyman organizational fodder.

The 26-year-old has spent the first eight seasons of his professional career in the Yankees organization. In 2015, he slashed .291/.337/.346 with two homers, 49 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 88 games between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
