Andrew Miller has announced his retirement from baseball.
Miller, 36, made two All-Star teams and won an ALCS MVP in 2016. After flaming out as a starter, the lefty became one of the most impactful relievers in recent history, both in terms of raw numbers and also how teams viewed reliever usage. In a four-season run from 2014-17, he posted a 1.72 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 421/67 K/BB ratio over 261 innings. Miller was also revered by his peers for his work with the MLBPA.

He’ll make appearances for Memphis on Tuesday and Thursday before being re-evaluated. In other words, Miller should be activated this weekend as long as he feels okay. He’s missed nearly a month of action because of a recurring blister on his right big toe.

Cardinals placed LHP Andrew Miller on the 10-day injured list with a right toe blister.

Andrew Miller failed to retire any of the four batters he faced Monday, giving up three hits and a walk against the Nationals.
Fortunately, Ryan Helsley came up big behind him and Miller was charged with just one run. Miller is quite the mess right now, though; his velocity has continued to nosedive and he didn’t touch 90 mph with any of his pitches tonight. The Cardinals can’t currently treat him like a reliable reliever.

Andrew Miller made his spring debut Monday and got two outs while also walking two batters.
Both runners came around to score after Miller left. Miller is off to a bit of late start after contracting COVID-19 in early February. He could be a candidate for the odd save this year, but he shouldn’t be a significant part of the closer mix for St. Louis.
