When 14 of 15 NFL favorites win outright heading into Monday Night Football, you’ll hear the moans and groans from bookmakers all around the country.
“It was a surprisingly tough day for us on NFL Sunday,” PointsBet Sportsbook senior sports analyst Andrew Mannino told NBC Sports. “That Seahawks goal line stand really carried us at the end to make the bottom line a whole lot better though. It was on the verge of being a really bad day before that.”
So how do bookmakers respond to bad weeks?[[ad:athena]]
“We’re a process driven team,” Mannino explained. “We just focus on doing the right things, taking the right steps and adjusting when we need to. You don’t want to overreact or get too up or down on any particular result. We just stay focused on the process.”
Many sportsbook directors reported that the Chiefs were the most lopsided NFL side of the entire season at their respective shops. That wasn’t the case at PointsBet. Mannino laughed when I asked if anybody bet the Chargers.
“Oh people had ‘em,” Mannino said. “Especially on the in-play betting, really nice action there. It was enough that the Chiefs turned into a slight win for us by the end of the game. But the Chargers certainly weren’t popular pregame.”
I think it’s pretty clear the Chiefs and Ravens are the best two teams in the NFL. I love asking bookmakers which team is on line three.
“It might be the Saints,” Mannino answered after a brief pause. “They’re a complete team and they do it on both sides of the ball. Nobody else has separated themselves in the AFC. The Packers are a team with good weapons and Aaron Rodgers is certainly doing more than his part. I don’t dislike the Packers, but I see them struggling to get past the heavy hitters. A lot of their success will come down to their defense and we’ll have to see how they stack up as the season rolls on.”
How’s the action on Monday night?
“We’re sitting comfortably at Saints -4,” Mannino reported. “It’s pretty lopsided so far. People love the Saints and nobody really believes in the Raiders even it is the opening of their new stadium. And we’re seeing heavy action on the Over. Bettors are expecting a shootout. We’ve seen almost 85 percent of the bets on the Over so far.”
