Maynard’s disappointing 2005 season led the Bears to sign Joel Stelly as competition.

After Richmond McGee faceplanted in Week 1 with three shanks, the Browns quickly moved on. Maynard, 37, averaged 40.1 yards per punt last season for the Bears but ranked 29th in net average. He’s more of a directional kicker at this point.

As an undrafted rookie last season, incumbent Chas Henry was among the worst punters in the league. But it’s unlikely that a 38-year-old Maynard would be able to win the job after managing just 40.5 gross yards per punt for the Browns last season. The Eagles also had free agent punters Mat McBriar, Chris Bryan and Jason Baker in on Monday.

He remains one of the top punters in football in a difficult place to kick.

“I assume Brad will be able to go,’' coach Lovie Smith said. “You need to cover yourself, but Brad knows his body, and we definitely don’t have him as out on that injury list. I’m hoping he’ll be able to go with some rest.’'

“If I had to go today, yeah, I could do it,’' Maynard said. “I’m definitely better today than I was Sunday.’'

Gabe Lindstrom will fill-in at Bears camp.

Dirk Johnson filled in for Maynard until he too was hurt, and Robbie Gould finished the game. Look for Johnson to be released by Chicago this week.
