ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi feels that WR Carlton Mitchell’s roster spot is in jeopardy this offseason.
Impressed by his size (6'3/215) and speed (4.41-4.49 forty-yard dash), the Browns drafted Mitchell in the sixth round back in 2010. Two years later, he has yet to emerge. The Browns are sure to add talent to the wide receiver position via this week’s draft, and the coaching staff is looking for more consistency from Mitchell.
  • FA Wide Receiver #11
Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer hears that undrafted WR Josh Cooper has been more impressive than Carlton Mitchell at Browns OTAs.
A sixth-round pick in 2010, Mitchell has three career receptions and is squarely on the roster bubble. QB Brandon Weeden’s teammate at Oklahoma State, the 5'9/180 Cooper is in the mix for the team’s slot receiver job and could make Mitchell and/or Jordan Norwood expendable ahead of final cuts.
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
Browns WR Carlton Mitchell is a roster longshot following the addition of supplemental pick Josh Gordon.
The top five spots on the depth chart figure to be taken by Greg Little, Mohamed Massaquoi, Josh Cribbs, Gordon and fourth-rounder Travis Benjamin. If the Browns keep six receivers, slot candidates Jordan Norwood and Josh Cooper will be the favorites. It’s safe to cut bait on Mitchell even in deep Dynasty leagues.
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
Browns WR Carlton Mitchell has “barely practiced” because of an undisclosed leg injury.
The injury held Mitchell out of Cleveland’s second preseason game after he caught just one pass for 33 yards in the opener. Already on the roster bubble, Mitchell’s injury has likely sealed his Browns fate.
  • FA Wide Receiver #11
ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi believes undrafted rookie Josh Cooper could be a “formidable challenger” to slot receiver Jordan Norwood.
Cooper’s odds increase if Brandon Weeden wins the quarterback job, as the two played together at Oklahoma State. Grossi also believes Josh Cribbs “appears to be fading as an integral receiving option by the coaching staff,” and Carlton Mitchell “could be a wild-card surprise if he has an injury-free preseason.”
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
Browns waived WR Carlton Mitchell, OL Jake Anderson, OL Matt Cleveland, DB Emmanuel Davis, LB JoJo Dickson, P Spencer Lanning, WR Bert Reed, WR Jermaine Saffold, and WR Owen Spencer.
Cleveland is down to 80 players, meaning they need to cut five more before tomorrow’s deadline. Mitchell has a nice mix of size/speed, but hasn’t emerged after being drafting in the sixth round back in 2010. His fate was sealed when the team added Josh Gordon in July.
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi says WR Carlton Mitchell “looked great” during OTAs.
Grossi listed Mitchell as a player who “might surprise” at this year’s training camp. After back-to-back underwhelming seasons, the 2010 sixth-round pick is squarely on the roster bubble. He figures to compete with Josh Cooper and Jordan Norwood for one or two roster spots.
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
Jaguars waived WR Carlton Mitchell and re-signed FB Will Ta’ufo’ou from the practice squad.
Mitchell was just signed on Wednesday but was the lowest in the receiving pecking order. Ta’ufo’ou was waived this past week, but the team needs him back with FB Greg Jones still out with a thigh injury.
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
    Jaguars signed WR Carlton Mitchell.
A 2010 sixth-round pick of the Browns, Mitchell has three career catches in 16 games. He’ll be depth with Laurent Robinson (concussions) landing on injured reserve. Look for Kevin Elliot and Michael Spurlock to act as the No. 3 wideout behind starters Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts.
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
Browns WR Carlton Mitchell is expected to be active for Sunday’s game against the 49ers.
The speedy Mitchell will take the game-day roster spot of Mohamed Massaquoi (concussion). He’ll be used as a situational deep threat for a few snaps.
