Athletics optioned INF Nick Allen, LHP Zach Logue and RHP Miguel Romero to Triple-A Las Vegas; reassigned LHP Aaron Brown, RHPs Ryan Castellani, Chester Pimentel and Austin Pruitt, INF Dermis Garcia and OF Buddy Reed to minor league camp.

The latest round of Athletics’ spring cuts includes a bit of a surprise in Allen, who has been outstanding so far this spring, and appeared to have a shot at making the Athletics’ Opening Day roster. The recent addition of veteran second baseman Jed Lowrie has apparently slammed that door shut. The 23-year-old middle infielder should get an opportunity at some point this season.

Athletics signed RHP Chester Pimentel to a minor league contract.

Pimentel recorded a serviceable 4.38 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 60/26 K/BB ratio across 51 1/3 innings (40 appearances) between Double-A and Triple-A in the Diamondbacks’ system last year. The 26-year-old righty will provide the Athletics with some organizational relief depth this season.
