As the WAC ship is sinking, it looks as though Boise State is looking to abandon the conference and soon take refuge in the Big West, according to Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman.
The paper quotes Boise State president Bob Kustra saying he has “no doubt” that most non-football sports will move to the new conference, hinging only on a formal vote by Big West presidents.
“It’s not done in terms of one final vote by the presidents themselves and the only reason that’s not done is try to get 10 presidents together in middle August before school starts. Once school starts, there’ll be a vote,” Kustra told the paper.
“In the meantime, there have been meetings with athletics directors, with faculty athletic representatives. I’ve been working closely with (Big West) Commissioner Dennis Farrell. Every indication we have is positive.”
When the Broncos join the Big West in 2013, they would compete alongside Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii, and San Diego State.
Boise State’s football program will compete in the Big East beginning in 2013, joining San Diego State as a western team competing in that conference as a football-only school.
Under head coach Leon Rice this past season, the Broncos’ basketball team finished 13-19, including 3-11 in the Mountain West. They welcome three recruits from the Class of 2012, led by in-state prospect Joey Nebeker.
