Cameron Bairstow, Hugh Greenwood lead New Mexico over Boise State
Through 20 minutes inside The Pit on Tuesday night, Cameron Bairstow, Kendall Williams and Hugh Greenwood accounted for a combined 35 points, off 12-of-17 shooting. The entire Boise State team shot 10-of-36 from the field for 27 first half points.
Boise State would rally in the second half, but its last 20 minutes couldn’t undo the damage its first 20 minutes had done, as New Mexico picked up a 84-75 Mountain West Conference win at home.
The Broncos cut a double-digit lead to seven twice, the second time getting it as close as five when Anthony Drmic -- who went for nine points, half his season average -- connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the lead to 69-64 with more than five minutes remaining. New Mexico responded on the other end with a three of its own.
Greenwood was one of four Lobos to score in double figures with 20 points. Williams had 18, followed by Bairstow and Alex Kirk with 17 and 15, respectively. Boise State was led by Ryan Watkins 15 points and 22 rebounds.
Last week, UNLV entered The Pit and right from the start used its intensity to leave with a 76-73 road victory. On Tuesday, New Mexico came out as the aggressor, which led to the 40-27 halftime lead. The victory over Boise State keeps the Lobos within striking distance of No. 7 San Diego State for the No. 1 spot in the Mountain West standings. The Aztecs are 5-0, while the Lobos trail by 1/2 a game.
While New Mexico stays near the top of the conference standings, the Broncos are still in search of a resume-building win. Boise State, currently one of the ‘Last Five Out’ in College Basketball Talk’s latest bracket, has previously lost at Kentucky along with games against San Diego State, Wyoming and St. Mary. In the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic blew a seven-point halftime lead to Iowa State.
A look ahead to the Boise State schedule, and only a few chances to secure a marquee win remain. The Broncos host San Diego State on Feb.5, followed by another home game against New Mexico the next week.
