According to a report by WCCO TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota forward Trevor Mbakwe had been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

The story had been removed from their website shortly after being posted originally but it’s back up. Mbakwe was lost for the season back in November, when he tore his ACL during the Old Spice Classic.

In seven games this season Mbakwe averaged 14.0 points and 9.1 rebounds per game, numbers that led the Golden Gophers at the time of his injury.

Without Mbakwe, who began his collegiate career at Marquette, Minnesota (22-14) went just 6-12 in Big Ten play but they’ve been able to advance to the Postseason NIT semifinals.

Ralph Sampson III is the lone senior on this year’s team, and with the likes of Andre Hollins, Austin Hollins and Rodney Williams due to return next season this news could raise expectations for Minnesota in 2012-13.
