The Louisville pod has been the pace to be on the first day of the NCAA tournament. It started with No. 3 Iowa State’s 60-59 loss to No. 14 Georgia State and was followed up by No. 11 UCLA knocking off No. 6 SMU by the same score.

The first game in the night cap certainly lived up to the billing as well, as No. 8 Cincinnati outlasted No. 9 Purdue in overtime, 66-65.

The biggest shot of the day came from Troy Caupain at the end of regulation. Cincinnati was down 54-49 with just 1:30 left in the game, but the Bearcats weren’t out of it yet. They forced a couple of turnovers with their press and benefitted from Purdue missing a couple of free throws, gaining possession with seven seconds left, down 59-57. That’s when Caupain did this:

Overtime was wild, as both teams went up and down the floor, trading bad shots and turnovers in a thrilling finish. Eventually, Purdue had the ball with just six seconds left, down one, but Raphiael Davis missed a would-be game-winning three at the buzzer.

Farad Cobb led the way for the Bearcats with 14 points while Caupain added 10 points and four assists. Barring a miracle, Cincinnati will advance to face No. 1 Kentucky on Saturday, and if they have any chance of knocking off ending the Wildcat bid for a 40-0 season, they’re going to have to find a way to clean up the defensive glass; Purdue had 20 offensive rebounds, a major reason why their were in a position to win the game despite shooting 4-for-26 from beyond the arc.
