Wichita State all-american to miss at least a week

Fred VanVleet

Fred VanVleet

Wichita State will be without their All-American point guard at the Advocate Invitational this week.

Fred VanVleet will likely be out of the lineup until the Shockers play Saint Louis on Dec. 5th, head coach Gregg Marshall confirmed to He’s currently battling a hamstring injury that has sapped his mobility and burst off the dribble. He first suffered the injury in a scrimmage against Oklahoma State and aggravated it in the loss to Tulsa.

He toughed 30 minutes in that game, hitting a trio of triples late in the first half, but it was obvious the injury hampered him in the second half. He hasn’t practiced or played since the loss on Tuesday, sitting out a win over Emporia State.

VanVleet also played just three minutes in the season-opening win over Charleston Southern.

Making matters worse is that Landry Shamet, WSU’s backup point guard, is dealing with a stress reaction and may end up missing the tournament as well. That means that Ron Baker will likely be tasked with running the point, which will give him a chance to show off his lead-guard skills to NBA scouts.
