Chargers selected Houston LB Emeke Egbule with the No. 200 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Egbule (6’2/245) was a 2 ½-year starter in the Cougars’ linebacker corps, tallying 13 career tackles for loss with five sacks and two picks. Egbule helped himself in Indy by measuring in with long arms (33") and running 4.65 with a 33-inch vertical. Physical versus the run and able to drop into coverage – he led all American Conference linebackers with seven pass breakups last year – Egbule projects as an early-career special teamer who could compete for a starting job after some seasoning.
  • NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein compared Houston senior LB Emeke Egbule to Baltimore Ravens LB Tyus Bowser.
Zierlein described Egbule as an “explosive outside linebacker prospect” with “exciting” upside. In addition to being a good pass-rusher, Egbule is strong in coverage. He didn’t test all that well at the NFL Scouting Combine, producing an athletic SPARQ composite score in the 33rd percentile. He’ll likely be a Day 3 selection.
  • Draft Analyst’s Tony Pauline lists Houston senior LB Emeke Egbule as an “underrated” prospect for 2018.
Egbule has been a productive player for the Cougars, and Pauline has taken notice, giving him a sixth-round grade coming into the season. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound linebacker has quality size and speed -- as he notes -- which should help him stay on radars. “He’s a run-and-chase defender who displays a lot of skill making tackles in space,” writes Pauline. “He needs to get stronger as well as improve his play against the pass, but he has the potential to grow into a three-down defender.”
