BYU redshirt sophomore TE Isaac Rex (ankle) will miss the remainder of the season.
Rex (6'6/247) was in the process of making a sensational touchdown catch in the back of the end zone against USC when he tried to keep his feet in bounds, landing awkwardly on his right foot causing it to bend inward. He immediately went to the ground and was fitted with an air-cast when he was lifted onto the cart and taken back to the locker room. It is now being reported that Rex will miss BYU’s bowl game and has had surgery to correct the issue, which apparently went well. As if the injury alone weren’t heart-wrenching enough, Rex has decided to postpone his wedding that was scheduled to take place this weekend. He is also expected to miss spring practices in March due to the ailment.

BYU redshirt sophomore TE Isaac Rex (ankle) suffered and injury against USC and was carted off the field to the locker room.
Rex (6'6/247) was in the process of making a sensational touchdown catch in the back of the end zone when he tried to keep his feet in bounds, landing awkwardly on his right foot causing it to bend inward. He immediately went to the ground and was fitted with an air-cast when he was lifted onto the cart and taken back to the locker room. To add insult to injury, his foot just grazed the out of bounds line, so he didn’t even get credit for the touchdown. He will not return to the game and could be in danger of missing BYU’s upcoming bowl game.

  • FA Tight End
BYU redshirt sophomore TE Isaac Rex posted two grabs for 18 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 27-17 win against Arizona State.
Rex (6'6/247) had a 15-yard scoring reception late in the second quarter from QB Jaren Hall to make it 21-7. He then capped off the scoring on a 3-yard touchdown from QB Baylor Romney, who entered the game late due to an undisclosed injury to Hall. Rex wasn’t really involved in the offense, but he was impressive in the red zone when his number was called. Rex will look to keep up his scoring ways next Saturday against South Florida.

  • FA Tight End
BYU redshirt freshman TE Isaac Rex earned five receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns in Tuesday’s 49-23 win over UCF in the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl.
Rex has been on a disgusting scoring tear over the back half of the season. Rex (6'6"/247) scored twice in four of BYU’s last six regular season games before doing it again in the bowl game to take down UCF. Like most of the best TEs in the modern game, Rex is a dangerous threat to get vertical for a guy his size. Rex proved exactly that on one of his touchdowns, taking off down the left hash and working himself wide open for QB Zach Wilson on a 27-yard score. Seeing as Rex is just a redshirt freshman this year, BYU have the star pass-catcher locked in for at least one more season before he is surely off to the NFL. Rex finished the season with 12 touchdowns.

  • FA Tight End
BYU redshirt freshman TE Isaac Rex caught five passes for 47 yards with two touchdowns in a 28-14 win over San Diego State on Saturday.
Rex has made the loss of Matt Bushman more than tenable, and his work this year suggests a very bright future. The 6-foot-6, 247-pound tight end found the end zone twice on Saturday, and that gives him 10 touchdowns in his second year on campus, and he finishes the regular season -- assuming BYU doesn’t add another game -- with 32 catches for 331 yards. Even if Zack Wilson leaves for the NFL, Rex should be another strong performer for the Cougars in 2021.

  • FA Tight End
BYU freshman TE Isaac Rex caught five passes for 45 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s 51-17 win over Boise State.
WRs Gunner Romney and Dax Milne did all the work getting BYU down the field, but once they got the red zone, it was Rex’s time to shine. Though he averaged a mediocre nine yards per catch, many of his catches were in the red zone because he is a size mismatch. Even as a freshman, his 6-foot-6 and 247-pound frame is a problem for most other college defenders to handle, especially with as good an athlete as he is for that size. Expect Rex to continue being BYU’s go-to red zone guy for the rest of the year.

BYU freshman TE Isaac Rex caught five passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 52-14 win over Texas State.
14 players caught at least one pass for BYU on Saturday night. Rex, however, led the bunch with five receptions. Though he did not lead in the yardage department, he was the only player with multiple touchdown receptions in this game. Rex has been building up steam with each game this season, increasing his yardage total in every single game thus far. How long Rex can keep that up unknown, but it looks like the Cougars have themselves a stud tight end for their star QB Zach Wilson to throw to.
