Lions signed Notre Dame S Jalen Elliott.
Elliott (6'0/210) was a four-year contributor for the Fighting Irish, and in his senior campaign with Notre Dame he picked off two passes and 49 tackles playing with Alohi Gilman; who was drafted by the Chargers on Sunday. He tested abysmally at the combine, unfortunately, running a 4.80 second 40-yard dash in Indianapolis. Pro Football Focus notes that he had an 87.6 grade in coverage last year, however, so he’ll get a chance to show he plays faster than those numbers indicate.

  • Notre Dame S Jalen Elliott ran the 40-yard dash in 4.80 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Yikes. This is the slowest time of any defensive back at the combine, and it “beats” SMU defensive back Rodney Clemons’ 4.71 time by nearly a tenth of a second. Elliott’s other testing was okay with a 34-inch vertical and 125-inch broad jump, but it’s tough to call this a successful combine with that high of a time. Elliot is likely a UDFA at this point.
  • NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein wrote that Notre Dame DB Jalen Elliott “has good size and may test well” at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Elliott (6'0/205) needs a good week in Indianapolis, as he struggled in other areas last season. “His 2018 tape might be a better snapshot of his abilities, but even in that tape, it’s clear that he has coverage limitations in man or zone,” Zierlein wrote in his analysis of Elliott. “He has below-average awareness and instincts that pull him out of position.” In 2019 Elliott accounted for 49 total tackles and two interceptions, after a 2018 campaign in which he tallied 67 tackles and four interceptions. A good showing in the athletic testing would go a long way towards ensuring that Elliott has a shot at hearing his name called on Day 3.
  • Notre Dame senior DB Jalen Elliott accepted an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Elliott (6'0/210) started full 13-game slates in both 2017 and 2018. He logged four interceptions last season and has two to his ledger for the current campaign. The former prep quarterback has made an impressive transition to the defensive backfield since stepping foot in South Bend. He’ll look to make headway in terms of his draft stock when he heads to Mobile for the premier evaluation bowl in late January.
