As expected, Taysom Hill named BYU’s starting QB

Though absent from BYU’s spring game because of precautionary measures, Taysom Hill was believed to be the Cougars’ starting quarterback for 2013.

Unless something changes in preseason camp, that’s going to be the case. BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall named Hill the team’s starting quarterback, ahead of Ammon Olsen.

“We have named Taysom the starter because of his game experience in 2012, strong leadership qualities and his breakaway speed and athleticism,” Mendenhall said. “Ammon also had a phenomenal spring. I am confident in his ability. We have two very capable quarterbacks.”

Olsen was performing well in BYU’s spring game before sustaining a knee injury that will keep him sidelined, so to speak, for about six weeks. Hill is coming off his own knee injury in 2012.

As a freshman last season, Hill threw for 425 yards, four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. He was also the team’s second-leading rusher 336 yards and four touchdowns before sustaining his season-ending injury.
