Getting to elite status certainly is difficult, but staying there isn’t always easy. Still, Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty and receiver Antwan Goodley told ESPN.com’s Brandon Chatmon they actually have better chemistry this year, and think they can build on a breakout 2013 season.
That’s a scary thought for Big 12 secondaries -- Goodley reeled in 71 passes for 1,339 yards with 13 touchdowns last year, accounting for a significant chunk of Petty’s 4,200 yards and 32 touchdowns.
“We have to prove last year wasn’t a fluke,” Petty told ESPN.com. “For us it’s ‘Ok, we were the best in the Big 12, why not the best in the nation?’ The encore is to be the best quarterback-receiver duo in the nation and lead Baylor to a Big 12 championship for a second time and get into the playoff and win a national championship.”
With Oregon State’s Brandin Cooks off to the NFL, Petty and Goodley very well could succeed Sean Mannion and Cooks as, statistically, the best quarterback-receiver combination in college football.
But both Petty and Goodley sort of came out of nowhere last year, given neither had much playing experience. Petty had 14 pass attempts to his name when the 2013 season began, while Goodley only had 19 receptions. Some other tandem could always emerge and become the best in the nation.
At least there’s only five months until we’ll start to find out (that’s too long).
