An automobile accident has left the postseason availability of one of Clemson’s top receivers up in the air, the school announced Tuesday.
In a press release, the Tigers confirmed that wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was injured in a car wreck Tuesday morning and did not accompany the team to Miami, site of the Jan. 4 Orange Bowl against West Virginia. The release stated that Hopkins suffered a mild concussion in the accident, but does not have any other serious injuries.
He was on his way Memorial Stadium to meet the team for their flight to Florida when the accident occurred.
“First of all, we are relieved that DeAndre is going to be all right,” said Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney in a statement. “He is lucky. We are told he does not have any serious injuries and we hope to have him join us soon. Obviously, DeAndre is one of the main parts of our offense and this would be a big loss if he is not able to play.
“But, it is too soon to speculate one way or another on his status for the game eight days from now.”
The sophomore’s 62 receptions and 871 receiving yards are both second on the team behind true freshman Sammy Watkins.
