Black Sunday is not yet in full effect for head coaches, but it certainly is for assistants.
The latest football program to send assistants to the coaching gallows is Iowa State, which announced that offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Courtney Messingham and running backs coach Kenith Pope have been “relieved of their duties.” The twin moves come a day after the finishing touches were put on a 3-9 season that was the Cyclones’ worst since a 2-10 record in 2008 -- Gene Chizik’s last season at the school before taking the Auburn job.
“I want to thank both Courtney and Kenith for their service to Iowa State,” head coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement. “They have great character and work ethic, and have been excellent ambassadors for the university and community. They worked hard to help elevate our program and have been an important part of the success we have had in this program the last five years.”
Both Messingham and Pope had been on Rhoads’ staff since 2009.
