File this one under the “Least Surprising Response of the Year” by Chairman of Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Peter Liguori. He thinks that the BCS move from Fox to ESPN is a bad thing for college football. Here’s Liguori’s take on the BCS to ESPN from an interview with Broadcasting & Cable Magazine:I think it’s something that the whole industry should be looking at. At some point, these leagues should be looking at what happens to their ratings when they go to ESPN. The fact that they’re promoted on a sports channel that is dedicated to rabid sports fans is ultimately not the best thing, in my opinion, for the leagues. When you have a broadcaster promoting your sport, you’re getting exposed to younger people, women. I think that’s something that’s good for your long-term health. It’s common knowledge that Liguori is a sports fan, but he must not have watched much of the BCS on Fox the past few years. Because if we’ve learned anything, what’s bad for college football is having a broadcast partner that knows next to nothing about college football.ESPN is nowhere close to perfect, but they are definitely kings of promotion, and far from a network simply for rabid sports fans.Like it or not, ESPN personalities like Kirk Herbsteit and Chris Fowler, and announcers like Brent Musberger and Brad Nessler have become part of the fabric of college football. So while there might be negative repercussions from the BCS move to ESPN, most of them center around the fact that we’ll have to listen to Mark May defend Dave Wannstedt for a few more days every year. That far outweights having to listen to Thom Brennaman find another quarterback to drool all over.
