Injuries knock two Tar Heels starters out of bowl game

Hey, at least it’s not because of NCAA issues, right? Right?!?

Anyway, according to a press release issued by the school, North Carolina will be without a pair of long-time starters when they take the field Dec. 30 against Tennessee in the Music City Bowl.

Senior linebacker Bruce Carter underwent ACL reconstruction surgery on his left knee Tuesday morning and will, obviously, miss the bowl game. Carter, who originally injured his knee against NC State on Nov. 20, 2010, is expected to return to full participation in the fall of 2011, but the injury could obviously have a very significant impact on where he falls in April’s NFL draft.

Additionally, senior guard Alan Pelc underwent surgery Monday afternoon to repair damage to his left shoulder. He too will miss the postseason game against the Vols.

“Bruce and Alan have meant so much to this program,” said head coach Butch Davis in a statement. “They have been great kids, great leaders and, most importantly, they will graduate Sunday with a degree from the University of North Carolina. Obviously, we are disappointed for them that they will not be able to play in the bowl game. However, our main concern is their health and preparing for the future.”

Carter started 43 games at Carolina, including 10 this season. He was twice named second-team All-ACC (2009 & 2010) and was a 2010 finalist for the Butkus Award, which is presented to the nation’s top linebacker. Carter blocked seven kicks in his career and scored twice on interception returns.

Pelc started 34 games in his career, including 11 this season.
