The first coaching move of the 2015 season (depending on how you count Illinois’s firing of Tim Beckman) arrived Sunday, as FootballScoop (full disclosure: I also write for FootballScoop) reported Texas State defensive coordinator John Thompson has resigned. The site notes Thompson’s resignation was his choice.
Thompson arrived at Texas State in March 0f 2014 after spending two seasons in a similar capacity at Arkansas State. A well-traveled veteran of the coaching industry, Thompson previously coordinated defenses as Ole Miss, Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Southern Miss, and Northwestern State. He also served a two-year stint at East Carolina’s head coach.
The Bobcats are off to a 1-3 start to the 2015 season and rank last nationally in scoring defense after surrendering 59 points to Florida State, 56 to Southern Miss and 59 to Houston. The Bobcats allowed 689 yards of total offense (366 rushing/323 passing) in a 59-14 loss to the Cougars Saturday.
There is no word as of yet who will replace Thompson as the Bobcats’ defensive coordinator.
