The coaching carousel paused briefly with BYU filling its vacancy, but this afternoon has brought us a couple of reasons to get the ride spinning once more. The first opening of the day comes at Texas State, where Dennis Franchione will call it a career.

Franchione was 39-43 at Texas State and oversaw the program during a time of transition from the FCS up to the FBS as a member of the WAC and then the Sun Belt Conference. Franchione’s retirement had been speculated for a while now, and with Texas State going 3-9 this season it seemed likely to come together this offseason. Franchione’s other stops as a head coach included stints at New Mexico, TCU, Alabama, and Texas A&M as well as Pittsburgh State.
The opening at Texas State is one with potential to grow as a head coach and a program. Like many schools in the Sun Belt Conference, Texas State is still a newcomer on the FBS college football scene and the location makes Texas State an intriguing job for the right coach ready to take on a new challenge as a head coach.
