SMU adds Wake transfer kicker Chad Hedlund

Yeah, it’s a kicker, but still. Plus, it’s a Sunday in July, so cut me some slack.

That being said, SMU, as the Dallas Morning News noticed, has kicker Chad Hedlund listed on its official online roster. That’s news as Hedlund has spent the past four seasons at Wake Forest.

His departure from the Demon Deacons, as might be expected from a player at his particular position, had previously gone unnoticed. It could serve as welcome news for the Mustangs, though, as Hedlund, with previous in-game experience, will be eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer.

Hedlund redshirted as a true freshman in 2011, then kicked in six games in 2012, making all three of his field-goal attempts as well as going 10-of-11 in point after tries. He was the lone Deacon placekicker in 2013, converting 8-of-12 field goal attempts and going a perfect 26-for-26 on PATs.

He didn’t attempt a kick in 2014.

The Denton Record-Chronicle has an interesting tidbit when it come to Hedlund joining the Mustangs: the kicker is the son of North Texas women’s soccer coach John Hedlund. UNT will open its 2015 season at, you guessed it, SMU Sept. 12.

Additionally, Chad Hedlund’s brother, Cole Hedlund, is a kicker at Arkansas.
