LAKEWOOD, Colorado: Hunter Lawrence set the fastest time in qualification at Thunder Valley Motocross Park, with a notably fast Lucas Coenen close behind in second in his Pro Motocross debut.
Jett Lawrence (2:02.489) led the first session, but was unable to improve his time in Qualification 2 while both Hunter (2:01.727) and Lucas (2:02.201) posted faster times in Q2, qualifying second and third respectively.
In untimed practice on Friday, both Coenen brothers took the time to learn the track and got progressively faster as the day progressed.
In the MXGP series, Lucas and his twin brother Sacha lead their respective divisions. Lucas competes in the 450 division with his younger brother, by one minute, leads on 250s.
They each won the last round of competition last week with a 1-1 sweep of the motos in Latvia, but they came to the Pro Motocross series with question marks over their head since they have not competed against a full field. They head to Italy for another round next weekend, so the visit to the United States shows a huge commitment to riders who are widely rumored to move the the American-based series in 2027.
The brothers competed in the Motocross of Nations at Ironman Raceway last year for Team Belgium and finished fifth overall. Lucas finished second to Jett in the MXGP + MX2 heat.
In his Pro Motocross 250 debut at Thunder Valley, Sacha posted the fastest lap in the first session, but was nipped in the final minute by Cole Davies (2:04.463). Sacha (2:05.217) finished second overall and will have a great pick in the features.
Julien Beaumer (2:05.465) was third in 250 qualification with fourth-place Seth Hammaker (2:05.597) and Levi Kitchen (2:05.786) rounding out the top five.
In the 450 class, Haiden (2:02.851) and Jorge Prado (2:04.286) rounded out the top five.
