For the last couple of years, Steve Spurrier has delegated “some” of the offensive play-calling duties -- coughcoughSpurrierJr.coughcough -- to members of his offensive staff.
This season? The Ol’ Ball Coach is grabbing the offensive reins and going solo on Saturdays.
Speaking to Chris Low of ESPN.com‘s SEC blog, Spurrier said the offense will once again be his baby this year, with his staff helping formulate the game plan in the week leading up to a game. On Saturdays, though, it’s all Ball Coach.
“I called most all of them last year, but I’m going to call them all this year,” Spurrier told Low. “Sometimes, you think, ‘Well, it’s probably best to delegate a little bit more, this, that and the other.’
“But, no, I told the guys the other day that I’m going to go back to doing it the way I did it at Florida. I’m going to call the plays, or else they’re going to all come through me.”
Spurrier also vowed to eliminate the dough-boy softness his team has displayed in the recent past.
“I’m going to yell and scream and be a jerk,” said Spurrier. “I hope one or two players say, ‘That coach Spurrier is yelling at us all the time.’ Nobody has said that lately. I’m going to try and be a little bit more of a jerk to some guys, because we’ve put up with too much soft play, put up with pitiful effort by some guys and put up with just not good team play.”
Given the utter mediocrity of Gamecocks football under Spurrier, it’s about time he attempted to get back to what made him such a success in Gainesville. And, if that means being an ass to his coddled players, so be it.
