LA Sparks vs Golden State Valkyries Game Preview:

Los Angeles, now 7-6, is off to its best start through the first 13 games of a season since 2020. The team picked up its third straight win, defeating the Phoenix Mercury 111-101 in overtime on Saturday. Plum scored a career-high 43 points, Rae Burrell also finished with a career-high 24 points off the bench, and Nneka Ogwumike finished with a double-double — 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Plum, in her second season with the Sparks after a three-team trade from Las Vegas last February, is in the midst of a career year. The four-time WNBA All-Star leads the league in scoring (26.6 points per game) and is averaging career-highs in several categories, including field goal percentage (55.5%), scoring, and assists per game (6.9 apg).

While Plum and Ogwumike (16.2 ppg) have helped power Los Angeles to a top-three offense (90.4 ppg), the Sparks are struggling defensively. They are surrendering the most points in the league (91.3 ppg).

In the debut edition of the By Way of Africa series, WNBA star Nneka Ogwumike explores the nuances of her Igbo-American culture and its profound impact on her journey.

The Valkyries made history last season, becoming the WNBA’s first expansion team to reach the playoffs in its inaugural season. Golden State, now 8-5 through the first 13 games, looks to reach the next level.

Gabby Williams, in her first season with the Valkyries after signing a three-year, $3.7 million deal in the offseason, has been a difference-maker for Golden State. She leads the team in both steals (1.7 spg) and scoring with a career-high 15.7 points per game.

However, Williams and the Valkyries will be put to the test over the next seven days, with matchups against Los Angeles, Dallas, Minnesota, and Las Vegas.
