3dSatou Sabally shot inefficiently during Sunday night’s 84-81 loss to the Aces, adding 10 points (3-of-14 FGs, 3-of-3 FTs), nine rebounds, two assists, and one three-pointer in 29 minutes of play.

Coming off a game with seven made three pointers, Sabally cooled off against the Aces on Sunday. She didn’t get many touches in the first half and when she did, her drives to the rim were altered by former Defensive Player of the Year A’ja Wilson. Sabally made her first shot in the third quarter, a pull-up three on a smaller defender in Tiffany Mitchell. Sabally took a lot of inefficient mid-range shots that didn’t fall, as the two other shots she made on Sunday were both within ten feet of the rim on backdoor cuts.

3dSami Whitcomb played a critical role off the bench during Sunday night’s 84-81 loss to the Aces, accumulating 14 points (5-of-12 FGs), one rebound, three assists, one steals, and four three-pointers in 28 minutes of play.

Whitcomb fueled the Mercury comeback in the fourth quarter scoring nine of her 14 total points all in the final frame. She drilled three three pointers, one in transition and a couple on drives-and-kicks via Kahleah Copper. Whitcomb was who Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts went to when he drew up plays in the fourth after timeouts, but her two late-game treys didn’t fall. To go along with her 14 points, Whitcomb maintained her role as one of the Mercury’s secondary facilitators. Sunday night was the fourth game in a row where Whitcomb had at least two assists.

3dKahleah Copper contributed 15 points (5-of-12 FGs, 3-of-4 FTs), six rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block and two three-pointers in 30 minutes of play against the Aces.

Copper continues to work her way back from injury but played critical minutes even if she wasn’t at her most efficient on Sunday evening. She’s still missing some shots that she routinely makes in the paint and at the rim. Copper hit both of her three pointers which were mostly uncontested and helped create three three pointers, making the extra pass when she noticed that a teammate had a matchup advantage or was wide open on the perimeter.

3dAlyssa Thomas nearly approached a triple-double once again during Sunday night’s 84-81 loss to the Aces, finishing with 16 points (5-of-10 FGs, 6-of-7 FTs), seven rebounds, and eight assists in 33 minutes of play.

Thomas played a major role in getting the Mercury back into the game in the fourth quarter when they trailed by as many as nine points at the beginning of the quarter. She scored an and-one after rebounding and driving the ball coast-to-coast in transition to tie the game up at 62 with 7:06 remaining in regulation. Thomas followed that by scoring back-to-back Mercury field goals a couple of minutes later, and found Kalani Brown and then Satou Sabally near the rim to keep the game within a score with under two minutes left. Thomas also passed former player Michelle Snow for 15th on the WNBA’s All-Time rebounds list during the third quarter.

5dSami Whitcomb shot efficiently during Friday night’s 106-91 win over the Liberty, finishing with 15 points (5-of-8 FGs), three assists, two steals, and five three-pointers in 22 minutes.

Whitcomb continues to provide a scoring punch and secondary facilitation off the bench in addition to hitting three-pointers at a high clip this season, bringing her season percentage to 35.6%. Friday night’s performance was the fourth time in a row Whitcomb hit at least four three pointers in a game. Whitcomb also helped the Mercury keep the ball moving on Friday night, as she found Satou Sabally for one of her seven threes in addition to two field goals from Kitija Laksa.

5dAlyssa Thomas was on triple-double watch during Friday night’s 106-91 win over the Liberty, recording 17 points (7-of-11 FGs, 3-of-3 FTs), nine rebounds, and 15 assists in 31 minutes of play.

Thomas was one rebound shy of a triple-double but notched her fifth double-double of the season. This was the 27th time Thomas has put up a points-assists double-double in her career. Thomas accounted for 92.3 percent of all of the Mercury’s points in the third quarter with 3:53 left. She especially took advantage of the fact that Jonquel Jones wasn’t on the floor for the Liberty on Friday night, and was able to penetrate through the Liberty’s point of attack defense often to get to the paint and then to the rim.

5dSatou Sabally led the Mercury during Friday’s 106-91 win over the Liberty, amassing 25 points (8-of-14 FGs, 2-of-3 FTs), six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and seven three-pointers in 24 minutes.

Sabally had her second-most efficient game of the season against the Liberty on Friday night. She hit seven threes, tying her career high and became the third player this season to make at least seven threes in a game. Sabally has eclipsed 20 points on nine occasions this season, which is tied for second in the entire WNBA. Sabally scored nine of her 25 points in the third quarter to break open the game for good even though the Liberty brought the deficit down to single-digits with 4:34 left in the third.

12dKitija Laksa tallied 11 points (3-of-8 FGs, 2-of-3 FTs), one rebound, three assists, one steal, and three three-pointers points in Saturday afternoon’s 107-86 blowout win or over the Sky in 28 minutes of play.

Laksa continues to emerge as a player who will be a key connector for the Mercury on both sides of the ball. While what stands out is her 41.3 overall percentage from three on under five attempts, Laksa helps keep the ball moving in addition to providing invaluable team defense while using her 6'1 frame to help her do so. Against the Sky on Saturday afternoon, she found three of the Mercury’s post players inside the paint once the Sky defense began to closeout properly on the perimeter.

12dKahleah Copper accumulated 16 points (5-of-12 FGs, 4-of-4 FTs), three rebounds, three assists, five steals, and two three-pointers points in Saturday afternoon’s 107-86 win or over the Sky in 23 minutes of play.

Copper had her highest scoring offensive performance since returning to play on June 15 from a knee injury and subsequent surgery. As she works back into the flow of the Mercury offense, it was a encouraging sign to see Copper make some baskets from deep in addition to successfully putting pressure on the rim, which is her bread and butter. Copper has always been a true two-way wing and she was able to force the Sky into five of their 20 total turnovers. Copper made the extra pass at the appropriate moments, kicking out to spots on the floor where the Sky defense was sleeping.

All of Thomas’ eight assists created makes from beyond the arc. Almost half of the Mercury’s total made three-point baskets came off a Thomas pass. All but one of her made field goals came in transition in the fast break, the spots on the floor where Thomas is most efficient at scoring the basketball. Her only make that wasn’t right at the rim came in the first quarter on a 17-foot pull-up shot on a pass from Satou Sabally.
